Endnotes

  1. Chomsky, N. (1982), Syntactic Structures II: The Wrath of PRO, Berklee College of Music Press (Boston, MA), p. 180.

  2. When asked about it, he claimed that he had taken a wrong turn out of the Infinite Corridor. This excuse became less plausible as successive volumes were published at ever greater distances from campus.

  3. Chomsky, N. (1984), Syntactic Structures III: The Search for Spec-CP, Bunker Hill Community College Press (Boston, MA), p. 306.

  4. Halle, M., & Lujah, I. (1972), Songs of Praise, International Phonological Association Press (Milton Keynes, UK), p. 155.

  5. Occasionally, the endnotes are more valuable than the main text. A certain sociolinguist (who shall remain nameless for his own protection) tells of inspiration gained by reading Montreal-area comic J. Pourrir’s book Just for Pranks. A single sentence in the otherwise forgettable book glosses over Pourrir’s arrests for befouling local department stores, but further details are provided in an endnote. In brief, Pourrir would enter a store and ask where he could use the bathroom, knowing that it was several floors up. When the francophone clerk responded “the third floor”, Pourrir would laugh maniacally and drop trou.

  6. Chomsky, N. (1986), Syntactic Structures IV: wh-Movement Home, Hopkinton Middle School Press (Hopkinton, MA), p. 39.

  7. Specifically, butterscotch pudding.

  8. Хомский, Н. (1994), Lectures on Government and Binding (7): Mission to Moscow, Middlesex Jail & House of Correction Press (Billerica, MA), p. 224.
