Double-Dot Wide Ling d’-ku

Ulfheðnar ber Sarkur

After the great outpouring of assistance in response to my recent sudoku-themed cry for help call to action, I decided to give back to the LingDoku-enjoying community with this LingDoku variant, which celebrates one of Linguisticdom’s favorite entities: the double-dot wide owhich is, of course, the proposed phonetic symbol for the nasal-ingressive voiceless velar trill.

Double-Dot Wide Ling d’-ku symbol inventory

The nine symbols fall, at least for the purposes of this puzzle, into the place and manner categories shown here. (Since neither the International Phonetic Association nor the Unicode Consortium are returning my calls, I’ve unilaterally decided that “the Cyrillic binocular Ocan and will be used in a pinch.)

The initially-provided symbols in the grid have been arranged into a pleasingly familiar and celebratorily-relevant pattern, with the appropriate cells colorized so that you may continue to enjoy their arrangement in the finished puzzle. For the most part, this LingDoku functions much like a normal sudoku puzzle, with the added constraint that no more than two velar symbols occur in any 2×2 block within the entire 9×9 sudoku grid.

If you think you can help Dr. ber Sarkur celebrate the recovery of his lost vowel data, submit your solution to the editors of SpecGram by September 28th, 2025. Solutions, if any, and solvers, if any, will be announced in the next issue.
