You decide to major in something besides linguistics..
The siren song of linguistics is appealing, but you realize that it just isn’t the most practical way to get ahead in life. Remembering the other students grumbling about economics, you take a couple of econ classes over the summer. You crush the curve in both classes and declare your major in the fall.
