Union of Linguist Lecturers Sets Speaking Fees

The Union of Linguist Lecturers (ULL) announced on Tuesday its standard speaker’s fees for 2011. Reflecting the poor economy, fees have continued to fall from their all-time high levels in 2008.

Keynote addresses continue to be the gold standard for the ULL’s members, with Linguistic Society of America Annual Meetings keynote rates set for $19.99 per hour, followed closely by all other conference keynotes, at $19.95.

ULL spokesperson and founding member Professor Deborah Tannen, of Georgetown University, told SpecGram: “ULL continues to provide quality lecturing at fair prices. This is a win-win situation for ULL and for the field at large.”

This year’s rates for talks outside of linguistics have fallen rather sharply, as a result of ULL’s renewed emphasis on explaining linguistics to non-linguists. “We had to drop the rates to increase our extralinguistic income,” Dr. Tannen explains. “Honestly, most other scholars just don’t understand us.”

The full schedule of ULL rates for 2011 can be found on the ULL website.

Dr. Noam Chomsky, ULL’s other member, could not be reached for comment.
