You tell the SETI supervisor about the patterns you find..
The project supervisor doesn’t believe you at first, but once you explain the pattern, he sees it clearly enough. You, as an undergrad, get shoved aside in the mad rush to analyze the data. Several grad students on the project get Ph.D.s and high-powered jobs out of it. Several professors get tenure. A few of the more aggressive members of the team get rich. You don’t get squat.
So much for physics. You finish your degrees. Now what?
Go to grad school in linguistics.
Just try to get a job.
